As part of her platform as Taylorsville City Youth Ambassador, Lauren wanted to do a service project that would benefit our community. She selected to do a service project for the Sanderson Center for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, right here in our city. The project she organized was a Community Bake Sale for a young deaf mother of two, Camille Call-Garcia, who has accrued large medical expenses due to life threatening seizures. Lauren called upon the sisters in our ward and neighborhood to donate baked goods, which were beautifully prepared and delivered the night before the sale. Also, the deaf community is an amazing network of wonderful people, who all stepped up to participate in an almost overwhelming way as well! They brought baked goods, quilts, and came out to the Sanderson Center on the day of the event, buying goods, raffle tickets, and bidding on auctioned items. Lauren's mail box at the Taylorsville City offices was full of hundreds of dollars of donations from the community, and also from other areas of the state, and even from Idaho and California. Checks continue to trickle in, but as of today, the event has raised over $7,000--far more than the Sanderson Center directors ever hoped for! We are so proud of Lauren for putting this program together, for her outstanding organizational skills, and most of all, her desire to give service to others.

Lauren stands with Jorie Hill and Edie McCormick, two Sanderson Center employees who helped her organize the event, and communicated with the deaf community. The bottle they are holding was stuffed with ones, tens, twenties, and even a hundred dollar bill that people tucked into the bottle as they left the sale!
Lauren baked and decorated this cake that communicated her "love" for Camille Call-Garcia. This speaks loudly in EVERY language!
This auction favorite--a "Hungry Man Meal: of chicken drumsticks, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas and carrots, a side of corn on the cob, and a dessert--were cupcake hits of the night and my personal favorite. These beauties were decorated by Sister Linda Coombs from the 4th ward.
We are all so grateful for the wonderful support that our friends, ward, stake and community provided for this project. Thank you!
