Since Scott is in Paris today, we've postponed celebrating Father's Day for a week. And because I've spent the day alone, it's given me the opportunity to reflect on the love and lessons I learned from my own father. It's also allowed me to contemplate other men in my life who are important fathers to me. Some of those fathers are my sons and son-in-law.
I didn't sent them a sappy card. I didn't buy them a gift. But, I need to tell each of them how important they are in my life. So, to Jim, Tyler, and Richie (and someday, Landon!) :
You are the father of my grandchildren. I love watching you fulfill this role. I love it when you you play with your kids, read them books, change their diapers, help them brush their teeth, coax them to try a new food, comb their hair and apply gel or a headband. I admire how you discipline them, teach them primary songs at your little family home evenings, and patiently show them how to perform small tasks. I am proud of each of you in your efforts to get an education so you can be a good provider. I am grateful that you are all gainfully employed, that you provide a comfortable home for your little family and take care of their needs in a way that allows their mothers to stay at home with your kids. I am proud of each of you and the great men and fathers you have become.
I want each of you to know that you are a blessing in my life, because you are a blessing in the life of your children. Thank you for being such wonderful men and fathers. I love you all.

A Quick Fix
It's like an addiction, this grandparenting thing. I can't make it more than a few weeks without need a quick fix. The California kids are coming in June for a couple of weeks, but when Scott said he was going to fly out over Memorial weekend to meet Brynn and see the boys, I jumped right on board. Pretty soon, Lauren called up and asked if there was room for her and Claire to tag along.
Um, yeah. Twist my arm.
We had a great visit just hanging out, eating out, and getting out.
Grandpa got to meet Brynn. I think he was a good influence on her. Well, and she on him. Brynn loved grandpa...
Griffin loved Claire...
And this grandma loved every single moment!
The tech museum craziness....
Brynn slept through most of it...
Jim and Kathie danced their way through it
Griffin crawled through it...
Jim practiced his space maneuvers
And Brynn came home happy as could be!
There's nothing as sweet as cuddling a sweet sleeping baby....
Unless it's being surrounded by a whole bunch of sweet awake ones...
Tuesday, we went to Happy Hollow--the perfect sized zoo and amusement area for little ones.
The boys found plenty to keep them entertained
Brynn was happy to have grandpa haul him all over the place.
...and grandpa got a double work out some times.
Here's 4/5th of heaven!
Look at the adorable dress Lauren sewed and brough to Brynn. She wore it to church on Sunday.
Okay. This is seriously one of my favorite pictures ever. Get the feeling these two are going to grow up to be much like their grandpa?
Four beauties!
Happy Hollow
Happy girl!
Gavin got a little adventurous as the day went on, and even went on this ride without anyone sitting right next to him.
They don't get much cuter than Griffin!
After a long day, the boys gave grandpa a nice swing ride in the shade!
Thanks, Jim, Kathie and kids for letting me and Grandpa and Lauren and Claire enjoy such a fun weekend!

I Know, My Son is 29, But.....
....a mom can still be proud! Jim completed his requirements this week to receive his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. So, let me brag just a bit, if I may.
We had the fabulous opportunity to travel back to Baltimore this week to participate in Jim's Dissertation Defense. What an honor it was to be present as his advisor, Allison Okamura, introduced him to the audience as "an extraordinary student" who was "willing to dive into new topics" and was "a hard working, generous, and wonderful member" of her lab. She praised his diverse research, saying that Jim was "equally comfortable with people, monkeys, and robots!" This quote will be a classic.
After introductions, Jim stood and "Wow'ed the Crowd" which consisted of his Committee (four professors from Mechanical Engineering, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, and Computer Science), several other professors and faculty, many graduate students and former lab mates, and his parents and wife. For one hour, he took us through the most professionally prepared slides I've ever seen, describing his extensive and interesting research. And using a lot of big words. Like "Discretized" and "Palpatory."
After the presentation of his dissertation, which is "Tactile Sensing and Display for Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery: Detecting Lumps in Soft Tissue," the committee met with Jim for another half hour to quiz him and ask more questions before giving their approval to grant him those three letters--P, H, and D! Then, they brought him to the lab to celebrate with cake and goodies!
In deference to Jim's abstinence from alcohol, the Hopkins team replaced the usual bottle of celebratory champagne with a bottle of Sparkling Apple Cider. His two advisers, Allison Okamura and Steve Hsiao, offered their congratulations with a non-alcoholic toast!
During the course of his education, Jim has been published in multiple journals, been a guest lecturer in Haptics Systems at JHU, presented research at an international Haptics Conference in Japan, been a teaching assistant in Biomedical Engineering Instrumentation and BME Models and Design, performed multiple experiments on (humans and other primates), written a chapter for a Surgical Robitics textbook, and spent a year as a visiting researcher at Stanford University.
His work ethic was mentioned multiple times by his adviser, Allison, who noted that Jim was the first student arriving in her lab every morning--usually the only one there when she arrived. She said she's never had a student complete a PhD program this quickly. His other adviser, Steve, described the enormous amount of research he compiled as part of his dissertation, describing his work as "far above and beyond" what is normally seen and expected.
The faculty advisors treated all of us to a celebration dinner at one of Jim's (and our) favorite places to eat in Baltimore, The Mt. Washington Tavern. It was such a great way to end Jim's...uh...Dr. Gwilliam's exciting day.
It wasn't just Jim who had an exciting day. Kathie ALSO has been working hard for over 5 years and almost 3 kids later! Jim honored her at the end of his presentation, and really...that's the only part of the day that made me emotional. Because she HAS been fantastic. Jim calls her his warrior and appreciates how she has stuck by him through his long hours and stressful deadlines. So, I also give honor to Kathie, for she has more than earned a PhD as well--Patiently Helping the Dream! We love her so much!
Congratulations to you both!
Okay, done bragging. For now.

Disney Weekend
We knew Jim, Kathie and the boys weren't going to be able to come home for Thanksgiving, so we arranged a short getaway the weekend prior to meet up with them in Southern California for a few days at Disneyland. Kathie has already posted multiple detailed blogs about our fun days, and you can read more about them here. I picked a few of my favorite pictures from the trip....

Griffin played every night with his "DonaldGoofyPluto" figures, and wanted to carry all of them everywhere he went.

Little Griffin wouldn't let Papa out of his sight. If Papa wasn't carrying him, he still wanted to hold his hand, even when he was riding in the stroller. So sweet!
Gavin's favorite ride was small world. He sang along with the dolls, as they sang "Jingle Bells" along with "It's a Small World" throughout the ride.
The morning after this ride, Griffin woke up, sat up in bed, and said, "Papa and the baby elephant!!!"
It was so fun to see the delight the boys got over the simplest things.
Their favorite, of course was meeting Mickey and Minnie, as well as some of the other Disney characters.
Gavin immediately figured out how to shoot and twirl in the Buzz Lightyear ride.
The parades were spectacular!
Gavin is a Wild and crazy driver! Takes after his grandma!
The boys had a little speak with Santa.
I love this picture because it reminds me of how cute the boys were with the maps. We're in the California Adventure Redwood Creek Challenge here, and Gavin would follow along on his map and tell us where we needed to go. Throughout both parks, he'd sit in the stroller and open his map, guiding us where we needed to go. Maybe we have a little navigator on our hands?
When we went on the Mickey Mouse Fun Wheel (or the Steering Wheel, as Gavin called it), Gavin was given a choice to get in a stationary car, or one that "swings and moves a lot." He chose the one that swings, and you can tell by the look on his face, he was a bit of a thrill-seeker! Grandma hung on tight. To the mesh bars.
The longest line we waited for was the new Toy Story Mania on Paradise Pier. But the boys were champs, and so well behaved. Finally, we got to put on the 3D glasses and board the ride. Gavin rode with me, and was a mighty good little shooter--he scored several hundred points without any help!
A trip wouldn't be complete without getting to see Buzz & Woody!
Um, yeah. We pretty much wore the boys out.

Griffin played every night with his "DonaldGoofyPluto" figures, and wanted to carry all of them everywhere he went.

We are grateful for the kids who were willing to make the drive down from Palo Alto to pick us up at the airport, and let us experience Disneyland with the boys!
